The General Studies Center was created together with UNA in 1973. From the outset it was conceived as the pedagogical nucleus of the University, to train students in the traditional humanities: philosophy, history and literature, as well as in basic sciences, pedagogy, research and extension.

It promotes the integral formation of the student body through the appropriation of values such as respect, tolerance, and a commitment by university youth to the search for justice and freedom at the national, regional and international levels.

In the last 25 years, it has focused on “New Humanism” in order to construct an updated perspective in line with the social context."

Projects of the General Studies Center:

  • Dictionary of Costa Rican Women Writers.
  • Humanist Observatory of the Historical Debt towards Indigenous Cultures and their Economic, Social and Cultural Rights for Good Living (DESC).
  • Interlace Relations International Cooperation to restore and connect urban environments in Latin America and Europe.
  • Interdisciplinary Diagnosis of the Rise (DIA) of the criminal and prison universe in Costa Rica.
  • Opening Intergenerational Paths for Sustainability.

The General Studies Center carries out other activities that allow it to understand the different contexts in which it is immersed and to decipher the scientific and cognitive paradigms in all branches of knowledge through:

  • Master's Degree in Humanities, Society and the Environment.
  • Comprehensive Care Program for the Elderly (PAIPAM).
  • Institutional Commission for Institutional Policy on Children and Adolescents of the Universidad Nacional.

Since 2000, the Center for General Studies has promoted the Comprehensive Care Program for the Elderly (PAIPAM).

Its mission, in line with New Humanism, is to create learning spaces for the enjoyment of older people as a support for healthy ageing, but above all, to raise awareness among younger populations about a new culture of ageing and old age. In 2023, 305 older adults enrolled in the program.

The Center for General Studies seeks to train people and future professionals to be critical, proactive and sensitive through humanistic education.
